One Monday, Kate & I decided to participate in the Peninsula Beacon's Street Fair Raffle. We'd already paid to advertise Mad Munch in the big OB Street Fair Issue & with it came a drop box on our front counter (pictured below).
There were around two dozen other drop boxes all over Ocean Beach, so we decided to each fill out the slips with our names & phone numbers & drop them off.
"What if we made a bar crawl out of it?" Kate suggested. Challenge accepted!
What a fun activity to take part in on our one day of freedom from the store. Our friend, Emily, joined us at Lucy's, & walked with us to Mother's Saloon, Arizona Cafe, Sunshine Company & Pac Shores, dropping our slips along the way at the various retailers along the way.
The prizes were a dinner for two at a steak restaurant ($100 value), a free massage at one of the local wellness centers & a brand new beach cruiser from Bernie's Bike Shop.
"I'm gonna win that bike, damnit." I said. "My old one got stolen on opening day & I'm getting tired of walking everywhere!"
About a week later, while Kate & I were busy at work, Dave, from the Peninsula Beacon came in to write a story about our recent opening. He asked us a few questions about how we started out & what our most popular grilled cheeses were. He ordered a Bacon Street, took down some notes went on his way.
I kind of forgot all about it, until one day in early July, Mike, the guy who sold us on advertising in the Beacon, came by to give us a copy of the new article that Dave wrote.
"Oh, & congratulations," he said.
"Congratulations? For what?" I asked.
"You won the drawing for the bicycle from Bernie's."
"What?! No way!"
"Yeah, just let me know when you wanna go over there & pick out your new beach cruiser," Mike said. "I wanna get a picture of you with it."
As you can see, I couldn't keep from smiling, even though the spelled my name wrong (with a "K" instead of an "H"). I did like how they mentioned that my old bike was stolen. I wanted readers to be aware that bike theft happens a lot in OB.
This time around I chose a red one, bold & bright, like PeeWee's bike. The Urban single speed with coaster brakes retailed there at $189. And, I'm proud to say that it still rides as smooth as it did when I rode it home after that photo.
