A Modified Menu Classic for a Big Occasion

The OB Street Fair rolled around about a month into our tenure in the store.  We weren't sure exactly what to expect, but we did know that around 80,000 people would be walking by our shop throughout the day on June 22, 2019.

To prepare for the large crowd, we decided to go with a simple menu, with only American Cheese on our Cheezers, to keep the line moving.

I gotta say, the strategy worked out pretty well.

The day felt like an open-house for us, because many locals, or "OBeacians," as we like to call them, used to the opportunity to get their first glimpse of the new Grilled Cheese place on Newport.

And, even though the basic menu didn't showcase much of our creativity, it did keep us in line with the pricing of the vendors in tents on the street.  That helped us sell over ninety sandwiches from 10am-8pm & plenty of $2 cold drinks from our glass merchandise fridge up front.

The only bad thing, was that my calculations were off quite a bit & I bought way too much American Cheese.  I had several cases of the stuff left over when we opened at 11am on Sunday.

"Well, we won't have to buy any USA until 2020," I joked.

The good thing was that American Cheese had already survived two World Wars & it was also the main ingredient for a new item on our shop's menu, the "All-American."

At $6 it was a steal, luring in hungry customers on a budget.  Much like the good old dorm days at Lincoln College's $2 for 1 Cheezers.  Sometimes it takes over fifteen years for a menu item to resurface.
